Elizabethan Hair within Portraiture and Hair Adornments

There's no denying that the Elizabethans loved having their portraits done, even if they were re done over and over again. The hair styles within these portraits I have researched are all practically the same. However, they have been accessorized differently. The Elizabethans are very well known for their elaborate style, so there is no surprise that they went to extreme lengths to create accentuate hair styles.

Here, the sitters hair (Elizabeth 1) Has many things included in her hair apart from the curls. She has accessorized the style with feathers, jewels and what looks like a hair fascinater.

Here the hair has been heightened with some sort of padding to give it that extra wow factor. The hair has then been accessorized with Jewels which seems to be a very common thing and has a crown
placed in at the top.

These historical portraits give me an insight to Elizabethan hair and will allow me to gather inspiration on this design process in order for me to design and create a historical referenced contemporary version of Elizabethan hair. Below I have researched modern images that included the type of accessories included above and also because they are similar to those of the Elizabethan era

I absolutely love this image because of how fashionable it was this summer to wear jeweled head bands which shows how current this trend is, it also references the Elizabethan era with the headband being refereed to as 'Regal' and also the actual style of the hair being quite messy and in a bun which was the style at the time.

Here is another image including jewels being put in the hair, and with Paloma's hair being ginger it really gives off that Elizabethan feel.

Queen of Hearts ruffle neck

This is another favourite image of mine. The colours, the hair and the hair accessories scream out Elizabethan!

Hair styles in Society

Hair styles in society

During the Elizabethan era the lower and working class lives were extremely hard meaning they had no time to plait their hairs or put them into buns so they were simply taken away from the face and covered by hats or scarves.

The hair styles I have been practicing and researching were found on only the Upper class ladies and obviously The Queen and her ladies in waiting. The reason behind this could be several things, they had servants who would do their hair, they had enough money or class to do so and even because they simple worked for Elizabeth I.

Here is a picture of The Queen and two of her ladies in waiting. You can see by the picture they have elegantly styled hair in what looks like curls and then the hair is dressed with accessories.

Elizabethan Hair styles

Elizabethan hairstyles

A stated in my previous post, my knowledge on Elizabethan hair is very limited, before doing this post I researched a little so I had something to write about, I now have researched a vast amount which will aid me in creating a historical inspired yet, modern take on an Elizabethan hair style.

During the younger years of Elizabeth and that of most young girls in this era it was almost law to wear your hair down, this showed people that the girl was a Virgin and unmarried. On the wedding day of a Virgin girl it was also favored for the bride to wear her hair down, as she was still considered a Virgin and after the marriage the brides hair will then be worn up in buns/plaits and curls and dressed with accessories or coverings like below.

Tudor Era Hairdos Excerpt: During the early Tudor period the hair of women was covered by the elaborate headdresses. During the Elizabethan era this changed when the fashion for ruffs became far more elaborate and increased in size which was balanced by more delicate head wear and set off by hair which was swept away from the face as can be seen in the above picture of Queen Elizabeth I. Follow the link to lean more about Tudor Era hairstyles.
As you can see, Elizabethan hair was generally kept off the face in an up-do consisting of  curls. The hair was then dressed with accessories and was then really set off with the Ruffled garment which went around the neck. The relevance of this image is to visually show a viewer what my research means.

Modern images like this one above of Jessica Simpson reminds be of the Elizabethan era due to the placement of the plait,

This image also reminds me of the awful, old curled hair the Elizabethans had. Untamed frizzy hair was certainly in back then,..

An introduction and My knowledge on Elizabethan Hair

Project Brief-

Hair styling/design and postiches are the two of the most important tools a make-up artist can work with because they can radically transform a person’s appearance.  This unit is designed to introduce the essential skills and techniques for hair styling and postiche application, including studio safety, health & hygiene. Students will be introduced to the technical and creative processes involved in the styling of hair and the application of postiches. Students will also learn about the historical contexts and cultural value relevant to the fashions in period and contemporary hair and wig styling.  Students will develop an awareness of research as the basis of creative design development and establish the relationship between research, design and realization required for a successful project outcome.

Through an employability-focused approach, students will be also introduced to the diverse roles of the hair stylist/designer in industry ranging from producing period looks for film to creating themed characters for music promos, advertising and fashion editorials. The unit, with particular emphasis on the timed assessment, will encourage students to develop key transferable skills in communication, collaboration and negotiation.

My knowledge-

My knowledge on Elizabethan hair is very limited. Hair wasn't the area I concentrated on during my previous course so I didn't concentrate on the historic/period looks. However, during my research I have watched films based on Elizabeth and the hairstyles that I noticed cropped up countless times were curls, plaits and buns. Also during the start of one film, (Elizabeth-1998) Elizabeth 1 had long, straight hair. I also noticed the hair was dressed wit accessories.

I have included a few examples of hair styles from this period taken by myself while watching the film Elizabeth (1998) the relevance of these images are to show my research, however little into historical hair. This is a starting point for my research.
