My evaluation and peer evaluation.

My Evaluation- 

I was extremely nervous for my hair assessment for two reasons, my absence during 3 lessons and my difficulty with padding, which was included into my partners design. Padding has been one of the most difficult techniques I have had to learn and I am proud to say I successfully finished a hair style with padding involved, With the padding being a success I can now see how good practice, perseverance and determination is. I think my padding in my final assessment was the best I have ever done, I got the height and coverage equal. The only thing that lowered the standard was a few strands of hair that was not crimped, this stuck out on photos. If I was to re do this look again I would double check that all the hair was crimped before starting the padding.

Also, I think I could have practiced the wiggle plaits on my partners design more often to achieve a better over all look but the messiness of how the plaits came out kind of worked well with the modern twist on Elizabethan hair. I believe I worked consistently with my partner to create her wonderful design. One main issue I had with working as a team was during a trial of my partners Hair design, She didn’t bring any instructions or hair charts for me to work from and she had to explain to me step by step, I would ensure that next time I work as a group that I would have all the necessary information weeks in advance to ensure I have maximum time to practice.

Overall, I think my execution of my partners design as a whole was OK. I believe I need to work on my skills as a hair stylist to improve my overall skill set and to alter my opinion on my own work. 

As for my blog, I regrettably say that I was not as excited to do my hair blog like I was with make up, I think this was mainly due to me having little interest in hair at the start of this unit, However as I have progressed and the unit has progressed I am now really enjoying the hair side of this course. I believe the above statement backs up my lack of in depth research and excitement. This unit for me, has been a very interesting learning curve and now I know I really do enjoy hair, I think my work on blogs for my next unit will be 100% better!

Overall, my blog is satisfactory. 

Peer evaluation- 

My partner was very aware of my design and knew thoroughly how to execute it. I believe Kerry, practiced my design continuously to ensure she mastered it, which she did! I think Kerry has a high interest in hair and was giving me tips on how I could improve my overall look, which i really appreciated. We came to a decision to change my design last minute and to include some more adornments in the shape of a gorgeous £2 Christmas decoration.. a Crown!
I really enjoyed working with Kerry because she understood how I wanted my look to turn out and did my design exactly how I expected it to turn out. Kerry managed to finish my design in under 50 minutes which was excellent! Her time keeping was flawless. Overall, I am very pleased with how my design turned out and am very pleased with her skills as a hair stylist and her skills and understanding as a designer.

I only have one negative point to feedback on Kerry during this process, I found she could get a little distracted at times and has accidentally burnt my head with a crimping iron as a result, which does not darken her attitude towards the task in hand and how well her skills are as a hair stylist but it does darken her knowledge on health and safety. Overall though, I am very happy with how well I have worked with Kerry and how well she has worked with me. Well done Kerry! :) 

Final Assessment- My Design

So today was the last day of assessments and it was my partners turn to do my design!

Here is my partners Set up. A clean and safe working environment. 

Finishing touches! I decided to add in a crown for extra adornments following our trial run. I thought my design lacked anything 'Alternative' and 'Creative' which is what my designs purpose was for, An avant garde magazine spread. I added the crown as a reference to Queen Elizabeth I as well as to add a bit of modern sparkle!

'New Elizabethans' Final Assessment!

Today, I did my first ever assessment at Solent! Nervous doesn't come close to how I felt, being so passionate about make up and hair makes me panic at the thought of failure in an assessment! 

Set up- 

A clean, well presented work space is vital in this industry, being able to grab tools quickly is a must. You should also, maintain a clean and safe station to protect yourself and your model. 

I had my partners notes and design attached to my mirror for reference, which is a huge help!

I think I did extremely well with regards to getting the padding as high and as good as I did, as I said previously I really struggled with this technique but when under pressure, I can do it! Although the clips are visable and the back is a little messy this is the best look I have done to date!

Assessment Practice Run- my partners design

For our assessment it's vital to do practice runs, this allows us to monitor our time and ensure we keep it to industry standards. It's also to ensure we find any problems with the design before the final assessment.  For our assessment we each play two rolls, the Stylist and the Designer.

I think my first practice at my partners design went very well, I have struggled with gaining height in the hair through the use of padding (rats) so I was extremely pleased of the outcome. I do however, think the overall look could be a lot smoother and tidier. My partner said she was very happy with the outcome which was a huge plus in this trial run. I believe the notes, design and feedback she has given me will allow me to create a fantastic final peice!

This design is my final one. My design consists of a bun on the top half of my hair and the bottom hair will be scraped into the middle and curled, The curls will then fall down like a waterfall.

I will have 2 plaits on the front of my hair which will go towards the plait. My hair will be adorned with a cross that will fall into the middle parting and onto my forehead and will also have pearl/diamond clips on the back. I am planning on using a crown on top of the bun also, but I have not included this into my design due to problems with the shipping of my purchase. 

Trial..

My trial was pretty difficult. It went as well as I hoped but due to the nature of the design it was very difficult to do it on myself. I am happy with my design overall. 

My Elizabethan look has been designed for an avant garde magazine shoot.

Fashions in Hair

Richard Corsons book 'Fashions In Hair' is a great read, not only for its great use for our project on Elizabethan hair but because it has such a wide variety of information on hair from all ages, eras and times. 

I have found the following images very helpful with this project.

The bottom two images are very helpful with the fact they include 

nearly all the hair styles that were worn during the Elizabethan era.

They are a great design reference which is why I am including them.

                     Modern designs based on Elizabethan hair.

Here I have gone back to the design of Two buns. 

I analysed all my designs and figured that the two buns was definitely my favorite one, I re drew the look to a higher standard. I also have that issue with not being able to construct the 2 buns with my hair. I could use a hair piece but I ideally, want my partner to create my look solely from my hair.

I now know I want my final design to include a bun and half of the hair down. My mistakes in these designs will allow me to create a great final design. 

Historical research- The History Of Hair

Here is an image of a Princess on her wedding day. This image has many similarities from the Elizabethan Era including the hair colour, high forehead and the hair style. A bride would wear her hair down on her wedding day just like during the Elizabethan Era. This image is dated from 1472-1553 which means it was done before Elizabeth became Queen, this informs me that the 'Ideal hair style' was also used 81 years before Elizabeth was Queen.

With this image also before the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, It shows the similarities to the Elizabethan era, The hair is dressed in silk where as the hair is dressed in adornments such as pearls in the Elizabethan era. The hair line has also been plucked back from its original place.

This image is also of a girl before the reign of Elizabeth. I have included this photo as it shows a reference to the Elizabethan era with the style of the hair even though its not dated or done in the specific era.

The Virgin Queen! Elizabeth I. This image is one of my favorite images of Queen Elizabeth. To me I think this was possibly done on her coronation which would make the long, flowing hair which was required during this specific day.

Here, my design consists of a fishtail plait on half of the head and an up do in a

heart shape on the other half of the head. This design lacks any imagination and I will not be using this as a look. I have included this image of my design to show how my work has progressed.

I like this Elizabethan style hair because its not too historic or to modern. It has that balance that enables a viewer to relate to the era. I think the adornments in the hair also make it modern, back in the elizabethan era the adornments were normally jewels.

I like this look because of its messiness. The over back combed heart shaped hair is truly modern, yet still references the Elizabethan era.

This image of Beyonce is probably one of the most well known images everyone will use as inspiration. This image is in every image search I have done on Pinterest and on Google Images.
The whole look is modern and also references the Elizabethan era.

I like this bun design because of the plaits also being incorporated into the overall application. I would love to use this in my design but can't help but think it would be very difficult and with time set to a minimum it might not be appropriate.

I LOVE this image! The plaits, the height and the overall feel of this piece of work just feels effortless. the reference to the Elizabethan era is very apparent in this image but it's very modern.
